FAQs when choosing self storage

When you need more storage the prospect of using self storage can be daunting. There are so many questions and it can be hard to get straight answers.

Bidders cannot touch items inside a storage unit but can look insider from the entrance.

Here at Space Station we will always give you a straight answer. In order to take away some of the stress in choosing self storage we have put together some of our most frequently asked questions and our answers to them. If however, after reading this you still have questions floating around then give us a call or tweet us your question.

What is self storage?

Self storage is more storage. Self storage facilities are essentially buildings full of rooms and lockers that can be rented by individuals like you and me who have houses that are groaning with the quantity of toys, old magazines, garden equipment or anything else you don’t need on a regular basis.

Can businesses use self storage too?

Of course! Many of our clients are businesses that need somewhere separate to store their belongings, either for the benefit of having a duplicate copy stored elsewhere for safekeeping, or because they do not have sufficient storage space on site.

Do I have enough stuff to justify self storage?

Yes. We have storage spaces of all different sizes. Our prices increase with the space that you rent. Our smallest storage locker in 1m³ and our biggest storage room is the size of a football pitch. Most of you will be pleased to hear that we have lots of sizes in-between.

But will it be really expensive?

It doesn’t have to be. Our self storage lockers start from a little more than the price of a few trips to your favourite coffee shop chain. Check out our special offers before you book as we often have discounts that you might be able to benefit from.

What about security – how will I know my belongings are safe?

The security and safety of your possessions are our prime concern. We have state of the art security in all of our facilities. Your storage room or locker will be padlocked and only you will have the key. On top of this our facilities are staffed whilst open. We have CCTV and PIN controlled access gates. All of our corridors are well lit too.

I see Storage Hunters and Storage Wars on TV all the time– can someone else sell off my belongings?

The storage units that you see on storage wars and storage hunters belong to people who have defaulted on the self storage rent. Every unit ever sold off will have been through a long process of the staff at the storage unit contacting the person renting the storage unit to request payment on a number of occasions and through a number of different channels. From the initial default to the sale of a unit’s contents could span a period of several years.

Who has access?

You are the only person who has access to your storage room or locker. You will be the only person with a key for the padlock and the only person permitted to access it.

What can I store?

You can store most things and believe me there have been some rather strange findings in self storage. It’s easier to tell you what you can’t store:
- Animals or people,
- Firearms,
- Flammables, and
- Illegal substances like drugs, explosives, weapons...
- OR anything else harmful to public health

Do I need to book in advance?

We usually have some availability for people that choose to use self storage at short notice. You could, in theory decide to use Space Station self storage and that same day have loaded your belongings into a unit. Easy peasy.

What if I need access to my belongings urgently?

We know how frustrating it is to need something and not be able to get it. We are open every weeknight until 6.30pm and on Thursdays we don’t close until 8pm. Alternatively we do offer storage containers with 24 hour access at our facilities.

What if I change my mind?

If you change your mind you can end your contract. There is no notice period. Likewise if your needs increase or reduce we can find you a new storage space that will work for you.

What’s the difference between a storage locker, a storage container and a storage room?

A storage locker
A storage locker is kind of like a big, secure cupboard, either half height or full height that you can use if you only want to store a few sacred bits and bobs.

A storage room  top_right_Brentford
A storage room is just that. A room that is secure and will hold your belongings. These are bigger than the storage lockers

A storage container

You know those great big metal boxes that go on top of ships. We  have containers like those arranged outside of our facilities in banks. This enables flexibility for people storing big and heavy objects or lots of belongings because you can drive righttop_right_Slough up to them and access them 24 hours a day.

Just like the rooms the storage containers are clean and dry and very secure. For more of an idea on the space you need check out our infographic ‘Calculate how much self storage space you need for your belongings’
